What is white finger disease？

White finger disease, also known as vibratory white finger or occupational Raynaud's phenomenon, is a condition caused by prolonged exposure to vibrating tools. This condition mainly affects the peripheral circulation and nerve dysfunction in the hands, and its typical symptoms include the appearance of white fingers. 

 Which occupational groups develop white finger?
 Workers who need to operate with tools that vibrate rapidly at a high frequency in their hands during the course of their work, such as rock drillers, fixed and hand-held wheel grinders, riveters, wind shovellers, tampers, chainsawyers and forgers. 

 Causes of vibratory white finger
 During the long-term use of vibratory tools by workers, the pressure on local tissues increases, leading to damage of vascular endothelial cells, local vascular constriction, narrowing of lumen, and reduction of vasodilatory function. Cold stimulation can cause finger vascular smooth muscle contraction, vasospasm, tissue ischemia and hypoxia, which in turn triggers the occurrence of white finger. 

 What is the specific performance?
 Specific manifestations are numbness, pain, swelling and stiffness of the fingers after cold stimulation, and the colour changes from grey to pale, from the distal end to the proximal end, which lasts for several minutes to dozens of minutes. Then the colour changes from grey to red, and finally returns to normal. It can occur in one or both hands, and is more common in the index finger, middle finger and ring finger, and can cause damage to the bone joints and muscles of the hand and arm, and in severe cases, it can lead to gangrene of the finger ends, and the muscles of the hand will be obviously atrophied or ‘eagle claw-like’, which will affect the function of the hand seriously. 

 How to prevent white finger disease? 
  1. Control the source of vibration. Should be in the design and manufacture of production tools and equipment using vibration damping measures, so that the vibration is reduced to as low a level as possible.
  2. Reform processes. Adopt measures such as vibration isolation and damping, and improve vibration equipment and tools. 
 3. Limit the operating time and vibration intensity. Focus on the cold season workplace insulation measures to avoid the workplace temperature is too low; the establishment of a reasonable labour system, adhere to the rest between jobs and regular work rotation system. 
 4. Strengthen individual protection. Provide workers with effective anti-vibration warming supplies, such as anti vibration gloves, and encourage workers to maintain good hand and whole body warmth when exposed to vibration. 
 5. Strengthen health supervision and daily health care. Workers in vibration-control operations should undergo pre-service and regular occupational health checks; those with occupational contraindications should not be engaged in vibration operations; and early detection should be dealt with in a timely manner.
 Through these measures, the occurrence of vibratory white finger can be effectively reduced to protect the health of workers.
